I viewed the new collection before it opened to the public and wanted to interview Scott to dig deeper into the collection. I wanted to learn how she juggles being a mother of three while being such a successful businesswoman.
The new collection is beautiful and can be worn as everyday wear or with evening apparel. "For me, designing is not a job it's a journey," Scott said. "It's a passion. It's not just about the jewelry; it's about the woman who wears it. What are her hopes? What are her dreams? I draw inspiration from every part of my life: the places I go, the people I meet, the elements of nature that take my breath away. My Luxe Collection was born from that inspiration. This is the world of Kendra Scott Luxe."
You're a mother of three, and you always look glam. What Mom's closet and style would you love to covet? Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie or Jessica Alba?
There are a few moms that I love. I am a huge fan of Victoria Beckham's clothing [her line]. I've worn her dresses; you've probably seen them - I've worn them during my openings. Her dresses remind me of the '40s and have got a little bit of vintage glam going on, which I love, but I love Jessica Alba. I relate to her very well. Jessica Alba and I, I feel are like kindred spirits. And I am a mom on the go - I'll be very casual, and I love Alba's casual looks. She does casual so well. It's still chic and together, and when she dresses for the red carpet, she is breathtaking. I love her effortless style - she makes it look so easy and she also has that ability to walk in and command a room. I think it would definitely be Jessica Alba.
How do you juggle all of this? How do you stay family-oriented?
When I started this business, being a mom was the reason why I started. I wanted to have a business that would allow me to be a mom first. Everyone that works with me and my company knows I'm a mom first. People ask, "Are you a jewelry designer first or a CEO first?" And I always say, "Well, actually, I'm a mom first, jewelry designer second."
That's how I run this business, and we are a very family-first company. With all of the moms that work for me, I'm literally kicking my moms (who work for the company) out of the door telling them, "Go to your recitals." It's all about family first. It's so important.
Life is too short to not make sure that you're prioritizing what's important. The key for me is having an amazing team. I have the best of the best, of the best. We hire very like-minded people. They are very positive, glas-overflowing kind of personality - so upbeat and happy, and they love what they do. They're passionate about what they do. If you don't have that, it's not the right fit for us. You have to have that energy, and I've got the best team, and if it wasn't for them, I couldn't do it all. You can't do everything. You have to be able to give certain things to certain people to allow that to happen. You have to do it - it's so important.
How are you liking CityCentre?
This center is absolutely phenomenal - it's one of my favorite places to shop. I remember walking CityCentre for the first time and being like, "We have to be here." I grew up here - I went to Klein High School, and Houston is so big that you don't leave your little pocket very often, and I remember my mom - who is actually here tonight - we would go down to the Galleria, and that was a big deal.
You know what I mean - for us to leave our 1960 Champion Forest area to get down to the Galleria, that was a big deal. So I never really knew about this area, and at first I was wondering, "Where is it?" And oh my goodness, when I walked up, I just wanted to be here. It's such a dynamic center, and they're doing everything right. They put together the best brands, and I was just blown away.
Didn't this collection, The Luxe Collection, take a few years to plan?
The funny thing about Luxe is that I didn't set out to go, "I'm going create the Luxe Collection."
What happened was is that I wanted to create collection pieces - like a curated, gorgeous group of pieces that you could pull out of your jewelry box 50 years from now, and it would be stunning. Your grandchildren could pull the Luxe line out and be like, "I've got to wear this tonight, please; Grandma, let me wear this." I have a grandmother that's 102 - I did that with her jewelry box.
What were the limitations to the Luxe Collection?
There were limitations that we had with our Luxe Kendra Scott line. We had a certain price point we were trying to hit, and we were very conscientious about making sure we had this attainable price point that gave everything we wanted in the line - beautiful stones, hand-set baguettes - but I wanted something that even was at an unparalleled level. ...
This piece that I'm wearing tonight, (Luxe necklace: the Pave Oval Bib Necklace in Iridescent Drusy), there might be three of these necklaces in a row, and none of them will all look the same because each stone is unique. It's unbelievably gorgeous and rare, and the turquoise that we're using is unbelievably high grade, 18-karat gold. As we started to develop and grow our brand, this just became a great addition.
Q: What is Luxe?
It's Kendra Scott's older, sophisticated sister. She's elegant and timeless. It is jewelry that's the collection pieces. These are pieces that you will have in your collection for years and years to come. Pieces that you'll want to pass down, and that's what these pieces are. I'm just really proud of it, and I'm excited to see it here tonight.
You already have a celeb following, and I get incredibly excited every time I see a celeb wearing Kendra Scott. What celeb do you envision wearing the Luxe collection? For example, do you see a specific pair of earrings and think to yourself, Cate Blanchett would look amazing in those?
I still feel like this collection is very approachable. With the Luxe line, there are pieces that you can wear casual, fun and relaxed. Or you could wear it to a charity gala and look amazing. You know I look at a lot of celebrities - young to old, and I think you're right, I think that Cate Blanchett is a great example - even my favorite, Jessica Alba.
People can wear Kendra Scott all day long and look amazing - and if she's doing a red carpet event she may put on Luxe. Our everyday go along, with your everyday wardrobe and then you've got these red-carpet worthy pieces. That's what I already see. Stylists are already pulling pieces for different award shows and red carpets.
How will Kendra Scott fans react to Luxe?
Whether you wear day-to-day Kendra Scott or you have that special occasion - maybe it's your wedding day or just a special day in your life that you want a special piece for - that's where Luxe can come in.
I think a lot of women will wear Luxe every day. Our Kendra Scott girls are going to find the piece that's special to them and add it to their collections when the time comes.
