Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW receives visit from state president

The District 24 Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars received a visit from their State President Melanie McConaghy who arrived in Victoria Nov. 30 and was taken out to dinner by auxiliary members at the China Buffet restaurant. Afterward, the members took McConaghy to Cuero to see Christmas in the Park.

McConaghy traveled to Yorktown on Dec. 1 to host a lunch at Aunt Di's restaurant followed by a 1 p.m. meeting at Yorktown's V.F.W. Hall. Also in attendance was the State Commander Sylvia Sanchez. After the District 24 meeting, McConaghy departed from Yorktown.

Melanie McConaghy was installed as president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the 86th Department Convention held in Corpus Christi on June 15. She is a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary No. 3892 in Harker Heights. In 1987, she joined the auxiliary on the eligibility of her husband, Mac, who served in Lebanon, North Africa and Cuba as a Marine, and Vietnam and Thailand while in the Army.

Since joining the organization, McConaghy has held all offices on the auxiliary level. She served as District 14 president in 2006-07 when she was awarded Outstanding District President in her membership group. In 2008, she was elected to the high office of department guard.

McConaghy graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1977 and taught elementary school for 16 years in the Killeen Independent School District. In 2011, she graduated from Texas A&M University-Central Texas with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting.

The McConaghys enjoy traveling to V.F.W. and Ladies Auxiliary functions and connecting with old friends while making new ones. McConaghy enjoys reading, sewing and working on the computer.
