Free pneumonia shots offered to those who qualify
Free pneumonia shots for those who qualify will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bloomington Volunteer Fire Department, 52 W. Second St. in Bloomington.
The shots are being offered through a grant sponsored by the Department of State Health Services of Victoria County and the Texas Area Health Education Center East - Victoria Region.
Getting the pneumonia shot can help a person stay out of the hospital. Pneumonia is not seasonal; it can appear any time of the year. The best way to prevent it is through vaccination.
Who qualifies? All adults age 60 and older who have not been vaccinated in the past five years or any adult with the following long-term health problems: heart or lung disease, sickle cell disease, diabetes, history of alcoholism or other drug abuse, cirrhosis, smokers, asthma, nursing home residents, persons with weakened immune systems because of cancer, HIV or an organ transplant, as well as the uninsured or underinsured and homeless/transient.
All those who plan to receive a pneumonia shot, please bring your shot record, if you have one.
