IF YOU DONATE
To contact Brittney McCartney about giving or receiving toy donations, call her at 361-894-3791 or 361-218-5440.
Donations may also be dropped off from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Tobacco Junction, 5803 John Stockbauer Drive.
Brittney McCartney knows what it's like to have no presents on Christmas morning.
"Last year was my first year without presents," McCartney, 23, said. "As newlyweds, my husband and I had bills and payments to take care of."
To ensure other families on tight budgets have enough presents for their children's Christmas morning, she decided to start a toy drive, McCartney said.
Last week, McCartney made a social media post asking for new and used toy donations.
As of Monday, McCartney had more than 500 toys in her living room and has given out presents to more than 250 children.
Since Thursday, McCartney estimates having made 20 to 30 trips to different homes in the area collecting donations.
"It's just a good way to give back," she said. "I've got gifts for everybody."
Alexandrea Joslin, 22, of Victoria, received toy donations from the McCartneys for her two children Saturday.
Joslin learned about the toy donation drive through Facebook.
"I was actually very surprised but also very grateful," said Joslin, who recently became unemployed. "We exchanged numbers, and within an hour or two, they came to my house and gave me a gift basket with a blanket and pillow."
