Senior Police Officer Herschel Buck was named Officer of the Year on Wednesday by the American Legion Post 166.

His peers nominated him for the award, said Sgt. Eline Moya, spokeswoman for the Victoria Police Department.

"Their decision stemmed from his ongoing exemplary performance throughout the year," Moya said.

Since joining the police department in 2001, Buck has worked various positions. His last assignment was traffic safety officer.

Buck was also promoted to sergeant at the ceremony.

While Buck was assigned to the traffic safety unit, Moya said, he performed his duties within the unit but also was selected as interim sergeant earlier in the year.

"This is an exciting time for the Victoria Police Department as we welcome a new leader in the organization," said Police Chief J.J. Craig.

"I have confidence in his ability to do a good job in his new leadership position."
