Earth Friendly: Garbage scheduled altered to accommodate increase in holiday waste

What is the happiest season of all can also be flat-out busy.

Gifts are being bought at a feverish pace, vacation that has been saved up all year is finally being taken, and an unusual amount of hot beverages are surely being consumed in this crazy South Texas winter weather we've been having.

The holiday season brings tidings of joy and days of traveling to visit family near or far, and it can sometimes be a little frustrating trying to balance the added demands of the festivities. The mountain of presents eventually turns into a mountain of boxes and wrapping paper.

The casualties of the holidays (broken ornaments, fumbled snow globes, that creepy ceramic Santa you won from a white elephant gift exchange years ago shattered into a million little pieces) pile up into a heap of extra garbage/recycling you have no room for in your cart.

Don't fret - we are here to help whisk away all the unwanted leftovers of the festivities and, hopefully, ease a little of possible frustrations.

We have put together a schedule for special waste collections.

Christmas Eve - Residential trash collection, yard waste and curbside recycling collection will be picked up as scheduled.

Christmas Day - Residents with recycling collection Wednesday will have their recycling picked up Dec. 28. Recycling carts should be placed by the curb by 7 a.m.

Dec. 26-31 - The solid waste department will temporarily halt yard waste collection to accommodate residents with additional garbage from the Christmas holiday. Residents are asked to put extra holiday trash in plastic bags, boxes or old trash cans by 7 a.m. Carts must have a 5-foot clearance between all city-issued carts and any additional trash cans or extra garbage.

Live Christmas trees will be picked up as yard waste beginning Jan. 2. Only live trees will be collected. Please make sure that all decorations and metal stands are removed prior to setting it out for collection.

If you would like, you may take your extra paper and cardboard or other recyclable materials to the Waste Management Recycling Center, at 809 N. George St., on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Those using the center must be Victoria residents with a current driver's license and must bring a copy of a city utility bill for verification.

If you have any other questions about your waste collection during last two weeks in December, please call 361-485-3230 or email us at environmentalservices@victoriatx.org.

May you all have a safe and truly wonderful holiday season.
