Advocate Editorial Board opinion: Thank you for supporting those in need
We've known for a long time that Crossroads residents are generous, caring people. For years, small-business owners and others have donated time, money, toys, food and more to help make the holidays and other times of the year better for those in need. And this year was no different.
In just the past week, Victoria has seen an amazing amount of generosity. On Thursday, H-E-B was prepared to feed up to 5,000 people at the annual H-E-B Feast of Sharing in the Victoria Community Center. Members of the community came to the event to volunteer their time by serving the food. This is a wonderful service that H-E-B provides across the state. During this time of love and caring, it is just one of many services offered through several groups and charities.
The Victoria Independent School District also took part in the spirit of giving this season through a couple of different ways. The district took donations for the Toys for Tots program at school campuses, and individual schools held their own events to celebrate the season. Dudley Elementary School hosted the Carver Center Christmas Giveaway on Saturday in the school cafeteria to help families get the food and items they needed for the holidays. Each family took home a bag full of canned goods and a choice of three meats and a dessert. Almost 2,500 cans were collected and distributed by members of Dudley's Early Act First Night Service Club. At Hopkins Elementary School, Academy Sports and Outdoors gave away 30 bikes to students in need.
In downtown Victoria, the U.S. Marine Corps and the Victoria Police Department's Blue Santa Program handed out about 6,000 toys to 3,000 children in 1,500 families Sunday evening.
The family of Army veteran Jesse Perez received a house full of free furniture in the Kamin Furniture 27th annual Magic of Christmas giveaway. The Kamin company gives away a house-full of furniture every Christmas, and this year, the company chose to help fill the Perez family's new home, which the We Buy and Sell Real Estate company helped them get with discounted financing.
These are just a few of the amazing contributions made in the Victoria area during the Christmas season. But that generosity is spread across the Crossroads through a myriad of different businesses, nonprofits and individuals willing to give whatever they can to help others.
Merry Christmas, Crossroads residents. We are proud to be a part of your community. We hope everyone enjoys this holiday season.
