Inspired by a Northside Baptist Church member, Ashley Furniture HomeStore has donated furniture to an orphanage in Belize.
Late last summer, church member Traci Kral have Kral and her family went on a mission trip with the Word at Work, a missionary group from Amarillo.
While there, they met Leonie Gillham, who has operated an orphanage in Belize's capital city of Belmopan since the 1980s.
Since 2010, Gillham has traveled the United States to raise money for a new orphanage for the 80 children who live there. The new orphanage is 20,000 square feet - 10 times larger than the one where they now live.
Gillham's work inspired the Krals to speak to Northside pastor Tim Williams about the orphanage that was in need of furniture.
Paige and Ben Streiff, owners of Ashley Furniture HomeStore, donated $30,000 worth of furniture, including about 150 pieces from the Ashley Furniture HomeStore warehouse.
Volunteers spent four days loading the furniture into a container to send to Belize. It is expected to arrive at Christmastime.
Kral and some of her volunteers plan another visit to Belize in December to help with the final move into the new Kings Children's Home Orphanage.
