Victoria Extension Education Association presents awards

Victoria Extension Education Association recently had their 2012 annual meeting and Christmas luncheon at the Victoria Electric Co-Op.

Carol Davig, VEEA chairwoman and District 11 director, welcomed members and guests and opened the meeting. Association officers, committee chairs and club presidents were introduced. The prayer was given by Josie Parr, the creed was read in unison with Betty McMurray, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Beverly Fox and an inspirational Christmas poem was read by Cynthia Miller.

Ruby Sellers presented the association's treasurer and finance committee reports. She announced to the members that the pecan and peanut sale was a success this year because of the continued support given by members and the community. Each VEEA Club that participated in the fundraiser was presented a monetary gift.

Victoria Extension Education Club, who received certificates of appreciation and monetary gifts for "New Members of the Year," were Everready, Pleasant Green, Raisin Coletoville and Telferner. Each club had three new members for the year.

Raisin-Coletoville Extension Education Club was recognized as Club of the Year. Jo Ann Bone, club president, received the plaque presented by Ann Hagel. The 13 members of the RCEEC have shown strong support for the county organization, Victoria Extension Education Association, the District 11 Texas Extension Education Association, and most of all, its community through community service by making monetary contributions to several volunteer fire departments, to Mid-Coast Family Services by donating monthly personal items, food and gifts for the women and children, also, donation of clothing was made to the Medina Children's Home; through countywide extension projects where members attended the Do Well Be Well Diabetes sessions, the Healthy Aging Conference and the Farm and Ranch Show; through TEEA projects of work by sharing TEEA recommended programs making contributions to Coins for Friendship and distributed "Etiquette of the Stars and Stripes" booklets; through extension education activities by participating in the pecan/peanut sale, attending and planning for the VEEA Christmas luncheon and appreciation day luncheon; through leadership by giving programs to clubs based on TEEA recommendations and other topics, conducted and attended leader trainings and returned to train others, reported 527 volunteer hours of work; and through club representatives one member serves as director for District 11 of TEEA, two members are chairmen of standing committees, and two members of the club are past TEEA board members.

Joyce Bell, last year's Outstanding Woman of the Year, recognized Josie Martinez as the 2012 Outstanding Woman of the Year. She serves on the council's recreation committee as an associate and is a member of the Telferner Extension Education Club. Martinez participated in Shut-In Ministry at Twin Pines Nursing Home for 32 years and is secretary of the Missionary Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary. She believes in helping the community when people are in need and also believes that we learn from one another and that good comes when neighbors help neighbors.

Tricia Simank, FCS secretary, received the Angel Award presented by Carrol Davig. The entertainment consisted of members singing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" led by Cynthia Miller and Jo Ann Bone, a trivia game quiz from the 1940s to the 1970s, and poems by Carrol Davig "Heaven's Grocery Store" and "The Dime." Blessing of the food was by Ileen Foley. The luncheon was catered by Grapevine. After lunch, door prizes, which were furnished by each club, were given to several winners.

Members donated 100 pounds of food to the food bank.
