Just less than a year ago, more than 100 community members, parents, students and school district personnel gathered at the VISD Conference Center to hear a report from Dr. Steve Murdock regarding the State of Address speech for the city of Victoria.
Dr. Murdock is a nationally recognized demographer and informed the audience that the quality of life in Victoria is directly proportionate to the quality of the educational attainment of its residents. With a strong commitment to provide each student with a future of hope and endless possibilities, our community members along with our school district have developed seven focus groups to address this concern and establish a "Community of Excellence."
These seven focus groups address the following themes: communication and partnerships, character education, mentoring and support services, compulsory attendance support, educational awareness for parents, school improvement and career preparation.
As we continue our work to build a stronger educational community, we invite you to join us Feb. 11 in the Victoria East High School Cafeteria as these focus groups will provide our community a report of our progress to date. The meeting will begin at 5:45 p.m. and dinner is provided at no cost. A reservation is required by Monday. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 361-788-2820.
On Feb. 9, the VISD Education Foundation is hosting the third annual Hall of Honor Tribute at 7 p.m. at the Victoria Fine Arts Center. This event recognizes and honors citizens of the community as well as faculty, staff members and former VISD students.
The foundation is pleased to announce that this year's event will recognize two outstanding individuals whose personal and professional achievements, strengths of character, citizenship and humble service to our community continue to inspire and challenge today's students. The 2013 honorees are Mr. Bob Moore, Former VISD Superintendent of Schools, and The Honorable John Sharp, The Texas A&M University System Chancellor.
Moore and Sharp will be honored at the tribute celebration, which will feature concert performances by band, choral, dance and theater students from Victoria East and Victoria West High Schools. A finale performance will be held by the Texas A&M University Wind Ensemble and String Orchestra. There will also be special appearances by the Texas A&M Honor Guard and Mascot Reveille.
Mr. Ernie Zuniga, news anchor and cohost of San Antonio's morning show, FOX News First, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Zuniga grew up in Victoria and is the son of the late Dr. Martha A. Zuniga, who served as our district's English as a Second Language/Bilingual coordinator.
A special miniconcert will be held by the Smith Elementary Children's Choir at 6:45 p.m. in the lobby at the Fine Arts Center. The choir has been invited to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference and will perform a few of their pieces as guests arrive.
General admission tickets to the Hall of Honor Tribute are $10 each and are available for purchase at Collins Music Center, Tee's Music House and the Victoria Fine Arts Center. For more information, contact the VISD Education Foundation Office at 361-788-9271.
Great leadership starts with a willing heart, a positive attitude and a desire to make a difference. Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire VISD we would like to congratulate Moore and Sharp for their service as "Champions for Our Children" and for all their efforts to enhance our "612 Square Miles of Excellence."
