Crossroads cattlemen have the chance to rebuild their herds, network and gather industry information this week at the Jackson County Cattle Raisers Sale and Trade Day.
The event, which spans Friday and Saturday, is presented by the Jackson County Cattle Raisers Association, Jackson County Beef Cattle Committee and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, according to a cattle raisers association news release.
It all begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the third annual Beef Trade Day, where attendees can visit booths and take in presentations.
Speakers' topics include ranch security, beef check-off dollars, surviving drought and herd rebuilding, rosehedge and huisache control, development of bulls and replacement females and new Texas animal health traceability rules.
Three CEU credits will be available for a $10 fee.
Saturday brings the cattle raisers association's first Premium Bull and Replacement Sale, which begins at 1 p.m.
Lynn Utz, the sale's coordinator, said more than 20 bulls are consigned, including Charolais, red and black Brangus, horned and polled Hereford and Angus. Other breeds may be available by sale time.
More than 175 top quality replacement females are also consigned, according to the release. Many of the open females will be sorted for county fair heifer projects, and more females may be available by sale time.
The group planned to host its first sale last year but called it off because of dry conditions, according to the release. Now that conditions have improved, organizers hope to make it an annual event.
Now, following the drought, is the time for cattle raisers to rebuild their herds.
The two-day event takes place at Edna's Brackenridge Main Event Center, 284 Brackenridge Parkway. Admission is free to the public and concessions will be available both nights.
Friday's event includes a social for consignors and sponsors.
Cattle will be available to view both Friday and Saturday.
