Victoria Symphony League meets
The Victoria Symphony League met at the home of Francisca Watts on Jan. 23. President Mary Jane Schurtz conducted the meeting and called for officer and committee reports. La Nell Billings announced that there were 33 members and three guests present. President Schurtz emphasized that the goal of the Symphony League is to promote the symphony, the endowment fund and the musical education of our youth and the community. As working benefactors, the Victoria League sponsors events that will gain financial support for these endeavors. 2012 was successful in meeting these goals.
Debbie Durham, educational chairwoman, announced the successful music projects of VISD students who have been active in contest and musical activities that the Victoria Symphony League has aided through gifts and volunteering. The TFME Club at East High School was acknowledged for its help in ushering and helping with the concerts at the Victoria Fine Arts Center. Durham also announced the sad passing of an anonymous benefactor who for years has so generously donated concert tickets to students and their parents so that they could enjoy a live concert. Mary Virginia Jacobs thanked the rehearsal volunteers and Cora Jo Hummel announced the successful raffle of the Mrs. Santa created by Una Mae Jones. Tippi Van Doren, photographer, gave the symphony league a gift of three CDs with photos of the September style show, the tablescapes, and the social gathering which can be viewed by all at photosbyvango.com.
In business matters, Helen Hultquist, secretary, read the minutes and Carol McLarry gave the treasurer's report. A vote was taken not to have the annual card party luncheon as previously scheduled for April. The Style Show Luncheon is scheduled for Sept. 18, and plans are under way to provide outstanding entertainment and fashion. Schurtz thanked the hostesses: Francisca Watts, Helen Grant, Charlyne Abshire, La Nell Billings, Jane Cox, Toni Hyman and Dee Totah. The next meeting will be a member appreciation and guest luncheon at the Colony Creek Country Club on Feb. 27.
