Victoria East's Terry Kinney takes a moment on the court after the Titans fell to Calallen 40-35 on Tuesday. East must now win its final two games to make the playoffs.

Victoria East's performance against Calallen left coach John Grammer with a lot of questions but no answers.

The Titans saw a 10-point third-quarter lead disappear in a 40-35 District 30-4A loss on Tuesday night at the East gym.

"I don't know," Grammer said. "I have no idea. I'll have to watch the video. It got to where we couldn't score. We missed easy shots and mainly we just turned the ball over and couldn't get a rebound."

Grammer does understand the Titans (14-16) fell to 4-6 in district and will have to beat Tuloso-Midway and Gregory-Portland and have help to make the playoffs.

The Wildcats (21-10, 8-3) clinched a playoff berth and kept alive their slim hopes for a district title, despite having team-leading scorer Christian Cantu foul out with 3:01 left in the third quarter after scoring six points.

"Their best player, who had 26 points against us last time, fouls out and pretty early in the third quarter and we just couldn't do anything," Grammer said. "Most of the time we couldn't get shots. It's kind of like their leader goes out and they stepped it up and we didn't."

East took a 26-16 lead on a 3-pointer by Jalen Wilson with 6:03 left in the third quarter.

But the Titans made only one field goal the remainder of the quarter and four the rest of the game.

Calallen outscored East 21-4 during a 10-minute 10-second span of the final two quarters and never trailed after Connor Lowrance's jumper with 6:57 left in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats dominated the boards and frequently got to the free throw line. Calallen converted only 11 of 26 free throws, but East shot only eight times from the line and made four.

"I don't understand that," Grammer said. "We've out-rebounded every team in district. I don't know. I have no explanation. I'm speechless."
