West's Draper wins regional title in diving

SAN ANTONIO - Mallory Draper is headed back to the state meet for the third straight year.
The Victoria West junior won the one-meter diving competition at the Region VII-4A swimming and diving meet Friday at The Aquatics Center at Palo Alto College.
Draper entered the meet as the top seed after winning the District 27-4A meet with a personal-best score of 444.15.
She had a score of 409.90 to finish first at the regional meet, after placing second last year.
Jay Mowdy is hoping to join Draper at the state meet. The Victoria East senior qualified second in the 50-yard freestyle during Friday's preliminaries.
Mowdy's time of 21.95 seconds was a personal best and the first time he has gone under 22 seconds in the event.
Mowdy also qualified fourth in the 100 freestyle in a time of 48.92 seconds.
The swimming finals are scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The first-place finisher in each swimming event qualifies for the state meet.
The next eight fastest times in each swimming event from around the state also qualify for the state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.
