The Crossroads can prove to be a challenging terrain when navigating the world of romance.
There are no mountaintops to hike hand-in-hand, no rooftops to enjoy breathtaking views upon while wrapped in each other's arms and few restaurants offer the ambiance of a candlelight dinner set for two. But as of late, there is a new option available to those looking for a little something extra to set the sparks flying - the Rockin N Carriage Company.
Billy and Marcy Newman are the proud owners of a new horse-drawn carriage, which operates in Riverside Park and looks as if it had been plucked right out of the Disney classic "Cinderella."
After seeing a few horse-drawn carriage operations around the San Antonio Riverwalk area, the Newmans decided to give it the old college try.
"We found a carriage in San Antonio, bought it and had Rose trained," Billy Newman said. "It was something we could do with the horses, too."
The couple owns a few horses, but right now Rose, a 9-year-old Belgian horse, is trained to pull the 880-pound carriage. Marcy Newman grew up around horses as a barrel racer when she was younger, so it was only natural for them to start a business involving the powerful, four-legged animals. With the help of their friend Sandra Swire, the couple has been able to spread romance in the Crossroads.
"The rides are about 17 to 20 minutes long, so it's nice to spend that time with someone and enjoy it," Marcy said.
To complete the package, the three of them each take turns decked out in formal wear and top hats to serve as the coachman - or coachwoman - for an evening of romance.
"We've done quinceaneras, wedding vow renewals and parades," Marcy said. "It's really been a lot of fun."
