Food service inspections for Feb. 6-13

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.



FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING FEB. 15:

Texas Outpost, 308 state Highway 72 East, Yorktown. Demerits: 26. Wash hands before glove use. Cover food in cooler. Store raw meat below milk; do not store uncovered salad bowls on top of each other. Date-label meat and beans. Store spray nozzle out of hand sink (meat department). Tabletop in front of stove needs thermometer. Need to clean the ice machine and soda nozzle holder in bar area. Two facility or equipment violations.

China Wok, 302 W. Main St., Edna. Demerits: 24. Wash hands after washing dishes. Employee drinks need lid and straws. Need to store raw meat below other food. Don't store items in sink. Only use professional, licensed pest control. Wash, rinse and sanitize all dishes in three-compartment sink. Three facility or equipment violations.

Grand Buffet, 4303 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 18. Cover all items in all coolers. Store raw meat below cooked food. Two days - date label; keep oyster tags for three months. Cannot use grocery sacks to store food; can not stack containers of food on top of food. Do not store knives between tables. Raw oysters need disclosure and reminder. Two facility or equipment violations.

Pollo Asado Del Angel, Mobile Unit 77901, Victoria. Demerits: 12. Wash hands at hand sink only. Use food-approved storage bags only. Date-label food with a seven-day use-by date.

The Barn at Mission Valley Grocery, 12201 Farm-to-Market Road 236, Mission Valley. Demerits: 11. Wash hands between handling raw patties and ready-to-eat food. Wear gloves when handling ready-to-eat food. Hand sink is slow to drain. Seal holes going to the outside. One facility or equipment violation.

Speedy Stop No. 7, 629 S. Wells St., Edna. Demerits: 10. Date-label deli express sandwiches and burritos. Clean the ice dispenser at soda machine. Post the 2013 permit.

IHOP, 7606 Zac Lentz Parkway, Victoria. Demerits: 10. Keep food covered in walk-in. Sanitizer bucket is too strong. Clean and sanitize all dishes. Two facility or equipment violations.

JaLaPenos Cafe, 2303 S.W. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 10. Store open drinks away from food; employee drinks need lid and straw. Label bleach buckets and chemical containers. Cannot use white thank-you bags and 5-gallon buckets that are not for food service. Use food-grade storage bags only. Two facility or equipment violations.

TMC Bloomington Head Start, 204 S. Leonard Ave., Bloomington. Demerits: nine. Keep paper towels at hand sink. Wash, rinse and sanitize all dishes. If dishes cannot be put through all three steps, they must be rewashed and sanitized at Terrace location. Two facility or equipment violations.

It's a Small World Nursery School, 1001 Manor Drive, Victoria. Demerits: eight. Wash hands before putting gloves on. Date-label hot dogs, chili, milk and lunch meat with a seven-day use-by date.

Montana Mike's SteakHouse, 6409 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: eight. Improper cold-hold temperature.

Gabby's Grill, 101 Lamar, Suite No. 2, Point Comfort. Demerits: seven. Do not block hand-washing sink; need sign at hand-washing sink. Store fish and pork above beef. Store beef above chicken. One facility or equipment violation.

The Red Apple, 118 S. Church St., Yorktown. Demerits: seven. Store raw meat below other food. Must wash, rinse and sanitize all dishes. One facility or equipment violation.

Christ's Kitchen, 611 E. Warren St., Victoria. Demerits: six. All spray bottles need to be labeled. Two facility or equipment violations.

Pizza Hut No. 022652, 3404 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: six. Address problem with gnats. Need to clean and sanitize the nozzle holster at the bar. Two facility or equipment violations.

Edgar and Gladys' Cafe, Highway 72/300 Front St., Nordheim. Demerits: five. Reheat all food to 165 degrees; meat on warmer was at 118 degrees.

Village Grocery, Highway 35 and Lamar St., Point Comfort. Demerits: four. Ice bags need label; need state license to bag ice. Keep boxes of onions and paper goods 6 inches off ground. Get florescent lighting repaired in kitchen.

H-E-B, 301 N. Wells St., Edna; Rolling Joe's, 101 Lamar St., Point Comfort; McDonald's No. 4, 7808 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Ol' Skool Hangout, 1302 E. Juan Linn St., Victoria. Demerits: three.

Dollar General No. 3864, 604 W. Main St., Edna; Jackson County Friends of Elder Citizens, 501 N. Wells St., Edna; Buc-ee's, 2318 W. Main St., Port Lavaca; Wal-Mart SuperCenter Store No. 1098, 400 Tiney Browning Blvd., Port Lavaca; Cathy's Restaurant, 2581 W. Adams Ave., Port O'Connor; Reel time Lodging and Guide Service, 604 W. Broadway Avenue, Seadrift; B and D's General Store, 9765 Highway 87 N., Victoria; Brown Bag Saloon, 8609 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Chick-Fil-A of Whispering Creek, 6104 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Club Essence, 1418 E. Juan Linn St., Victoria; Copperfield Village, 501 E. Larkspur St., Victoria; HIV Services Food Pantry, 2805 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Shooters, 4102 N. RE-INSPECTIONS

Broadway Grocery, 205 Broadway St., Nordheim, inspected Jan. 28 with nine demerits. Re-inspected Feb. 8, all violations corrected.

The "Other" Store No. 1, 2407 Port Lavaca Highway, Victoria, inspected Jan. 30 with 22 demerits. Re-inspected Feb. 6, continuing to work on violations.

The Corral, 3502 Houston Highway, Victoria, inspected Feb. 1 with 15 demerits. Re-inspected Feb. 7, most violations corrected.

Country Store and Ice, 252 state Highway 72, Yorktown, inspected Jan. 28 with 13 demerits. Re-inspected Feb. 8, need to fix faucet in women's restroom. All other violations corrected.
