Suspected illegal immigrants flee in Goliad; 17 later captured
Goliad County Sheriff's deputies searched for and detained 17 suspected illegal immigrants Wednesday, after a bailout Tuesday night.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop two pickups at about 6 p.m. Tuesday on suspicion of a traffic violation, sheriff's office Deputy Virginia Escojido said.
The trucks fled, with one stopping at Ward Street and San Patricio Street and the other at Farm-to-Market Road 239 and U.S. Highway 59. An unknown number of people fled into the nearby areas, Escojido said.
Officers searched for and located eight suspected illegal immigrants Tuesday night and nineWednesday, including a 6-year-old girl.
The child was reunited with her mother in Houston, while the other 16 immigrants were picked up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, the deputy said.
