A Pearsall man died Wednesday morning in a fiery traffic crash about four miles west of Gonzales.
Rafael Ortiz, 63, driving a Freightliner tractor with a crude oil tanker trailer, was traveling east on alternate U.S. Highway 90 near Farm-to-Market Road 2091 when he left the roadway, overcorrected and the truck rolled over, Department of Public Safety officials said.
Both the truck and trailer caught fire, said DPS Trooper Jason Reyes.
Residents within about a mile-and-half radius were evacuated as a precaution and the roadway was closed.
Residents returned and the highway reopened about 2:30 p.m., the trooper said.
It is unknown if rain was a factor. The crash continues to be under investigation, Reyes said.
Ortiz was not wearing a seat belt.
