College Q&A: UHV Alumni Association growing
I am a graduate of the University of Houston-Victoria. How can I get involved with my alumni association?
The University of Houston-Victoria has more than 12,000 alumni, and the university is creating new programs and opportunities to harness the power of its network.
Andrea Dry, UHV's associate director of alumni relations and annual giving, is working with alumni to build a stronger association. This includes the formation of new chapters in the coming months. Once bylaws are finalized, alumni will be able to create chapters around the state.
Dry said alumni are interested in getting more involved with the association.
"They have asked for more networking events and community service projects," she said. "Once we have chapters established, it will be easier for alumni to organize events with others in their area. In the meantime, we are working on connecting with more alumni and planning local events."
The association recently began hosting monthly luncheons in Victoria to get alumni involved. The meetings include a catered lunch, a speaker and the opportunity to network. The luncheons are held the last week of each month.
The next luncheon is from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The cost is $5, and attendees must RSVP. To register for the event, go to uhvalumni.eventbrite.com.
The speaker this month is alumna Michele Rohde, a financial adviser for Edward Jones. She will talk about new programs and rules related to student loans. She also will give tips on taxes and saving money.
The association also is working with UHV Career Services to offer a connection between alumni business owners and current students searching for a job. Those searching for employees can go to uhvconnect.org to submit a job posting and look through resumes.
Dry said the best way for UHV alumni to stay abreast of association news and events is by registering online at uhvconnect.org. The website has up-to-date information on events and other benefits. Alumni can also stay in contact through social media on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
