Now that you have exhausted your debit and credit accounts on holiday spending, it's time to give your wallet a rest.

Your local library is a great resource for cheap entertainment. All you need is proof of home address and an identification card.

Easy, right?

If you are new to the library, or if it has just been a while since you've popped open a book, here are some pointers for visiting the Victoria Public Library.

Park and enter from the back of the building, the front entrance is closed.

Plan on spending at least an hour combing through the library's wide selection of books, audio and film.

Bring a light jacket in case it gets chilly.

To avoid running up further debt to your name, skip actually getting a library card and just read while you are there. If you do not finish that book in one sitting, and if the book is checked out when you return, move to another selection temporarily.

Hooked on e-readers? Have no fear, the library allows you to check out books using your Kindle or iPhone book application to read whatever our book columnist Kat Duncan says you should be devouring this week.

And like Duncan, the library exudes charm.

Upon entering, visitors are met with a large, copper-colored plaque thanking the O'Connors, McCans, Welders, DeLeons and other Crossroads families of historical notoriety.

Greeting book lovers at the front doors is a darling exhibit of the Christmas nativity scene, on loan from local art collector Joella Pickering Smith.

Wide, wall-sized windows pour out natural light, giving readers an almost holy experience for the few hours they may spend reading through romance, adventure and mystery.

Start your affair with books and the library now while your wallet is in recovery.

The library is a serene, cheap escape from your humdrum routine.
