United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting

The William P. Rogers Chapter 44, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Victoria, met Nov. 16 at the Power Home at 2:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Ann Heinrich, president. Invocation was given by Marilyn Niesner, chaplain. A moment of silence was observed in memory of member Diana Koonz Massey. Heinrich led the Ritual of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Alma Wehmeyer led the pledge to the United States Flag and Patricia Williams led the pledge to the Texas flag. The salute to the Confederate flag was led by Simone Tipton.

The president welcomed members and guests Elizabeth Ann Mozisek and Gary Ralston. Members in attendance were: Mary Belle Meitzen, Ann Heinrich, Alma Wehmeyer, Marilyn Niesner, Patricia Williams, Tami Hurley, Simone Tipton, Sue Raaz, Janis Rollins, Sharron Torrence, Bettye Pribyl, Kathleen Reimann, Susan Johns Purcell and Linda Alexander.

Meitzen introduced Calhoun County Historical Commission member Gary Ralston, who presented the program, "The Great Camel Experiment of the Southwest," based on The Texas Historical Commission Marker Story research. Three men who were instrumental in the Camel Corps included Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Lt. David D. Porter and Major Henry C. Wayne. Photos of loading and shipping camels on the USS Supply were included along with a picture of the Indianola loading wharves. Members were encouraged to view the new camel corps silhouette at Indianola and visit indianolatx.com.

Children of the Confederacy chapter sponsor Susan Johns Purcell reported Genevieve Stevenson Chapter 604 was awarded the third-place Chapter Report at the 74th Annual Texas Division Children of Confederacy Convention on June 8-10 at Round Rock.

Tipton gave a highlight on her great-great-grandfather Levi Nicolas Titsworth, who mustered into Howell's Texas Battery, which later was designated as the 11th Field Battery. Hurley will highlight her ancestor at the January meeting.

At the 116th Annual Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy Convention in Tyler Sept. 27-30, William P. Rogers was represented by Heinrich, president; Alexander, corresponding secretary, and Simone Tipton, parliamentarian. The new chapter flag, designed and sewn by Tipton, was dedicated by Jamie Crump, president, at the Friday afternoon business session. The William P. Rogers scrapbook created by Kathleen Reimann received third place. Heinrich received recognition for leading William P. Rogers 44 in the historical centennial rededication of its Confederate monument, "The Last Stand." Heinrich was recognized for Outstanding Service to the Texas Division UDC as Memorial Building Chairman on Sept. 29.

Appointed to the Texas Division State Committees are: Mrs. Norman V. Randolph Relief, Linda Alexander; Organization of New Chapters, Anna Heinrich; Patriotic Activities, Tami Hurley; Texas Confederate Heroes Day, Heinrich; and Veterans History Project, Heinrich.

Hostesses for the day Susan Johns Purcell, Sue Jones, Betty Pribyl and Sharron Torrence were thanked. The next meeting is Jan. 18 at the home of Belva Zirjacks. The program, "Confederate Woman Spies," will be presented by Susan Johns Purcell. The meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer by Marilyn Niesner, chaplain.
