Two 18-wheelers crashed on U.S. 77 in Lavaca County around 3 p.m. Monday. One man was hospitalized with injuries.

Two 18-wheelers crashed on U.S. Highway 77 in Lavaca County Monday afternoon.

David Webb, 33, was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin with "incapacitating injuries" after the 3 p.m. wreck, Department of Public Safety Trooper Craig Wycoff said.

Webb's driver's license lists Nixon as his city of residence, but co-workers said he lives in Canyon Lake, the trooper said.

Webb was traveling south in the first 18-wheeler near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 531, when he made a U-turn on an improved shoulder. The driver of the 18-wheeler behind him didn't have enough time or distance to stop, Wycoff said.

"The vehicle that was approaching from behind hit Webb on the left front quarter and demolished the front end," he said. "Webb's truck-tractor turned onto its right side."

Webb's condition was not available as of Monday night.

The other 18-wheeler was driven by Jose Cortez, 44, of New Braunfels. Wycoff said Cortez was possibly injured but declined to be treated at the scene.

The 18-wheelers were empty.

Wycoff said no citations were issued and the investigation is ongoing.
