HOW TO HELP

To report any suspicious activity call the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department at 361-553-4646

PORT LAVACA - The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rash of burglaries in Port O'Connor.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office received reports of seven burglaries in December and another in January, all in Port O'Connor. Investigators believe these burglaries are all related, said Calhoun County Sheriff George Aleman.

The burglars seem to take whatever is handy, with everything from alcohol to flat-screen televisions, fishing equipment, a four-wheeler and a kayak trailer reported missing, Investigator Bobby Vickery said.

While the investigation is ongoing, Aleman noted there are a few things residents can do to help prevent more burglaries.

"Burglary is an opportunistic crime. If the chance is there, they're going to take advantage of it," Aleman said.

Residents should make sure they have secured their homes properly and avoid leaving anything valuable lying around where someone could easily take it. It's also advisable to invest in some inexpensive surveillance equipment, such as game cameras, Vickery added.

Aleman underlined that any suspicious activity should be reported as soon as possible.

"We're on duty 24 hours a day, so it doesn't bother us if you call right away when you see something in the middle of the night. That call could help our investigation," Aleman said. "We want to get to the bottom of this and get it taken care of."
