Catholic Daughters, St. Ann Court No. 369, meet

Catholic Daughters, Court St. Ann No. 369, had its regular meeting Jan. 7 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Libby Ramirez, vice regent, introduced Dr. Shirley Mumphord, VISD counselor at West High School, who gave a very inspiring and informative program on the Mentoring Program being implemented in the school district. She encouraged and challenged members to become actively involved by participating in the program.

Kathryn Ormsby, regent, opened the business meeting, and Fr. George Henniger led members in the opening prayer. Linda Cantu and Jennifer Shellenbarger were introduced and welcomed as new members. Minutes and financial reports were presented and approved. Roberta Alvarez, secretary, read thank-you notes from Perpetual Help Home, Incarnate Word Vocations Awareness, Clergy Fraternal Day and OLV TV Mass Fund for monetary contributions received from our court.

Guidelines and timelines for both area and state education scholarships were presented by scholarship chairman, Susana Moya, and application packets were made available to members.

Sandra Genoway, quality of life chairman, reported that bingo games were held at the nursing home and members assisting included Rose Curtis, Esther Gonzalez, Claudia Sheblak and Faye Melner. She announced upcoming activities, which include a Senior Fun Day Jan. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the KC Hall and a Gabriel Project baby shower at the next regular meeting. Members were also reminded that revealing of secret pals will take place at the February meeting as well as drawing for new secret pals.

Donna Mueller, legislative chairman, provided members with a handout on current legislative issues and encouraged members to study them, be informed and take necessary action as individuals. She also reminded members of the Candlelight March for Life scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. beginning at the De Leon Plaza and ending at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Under new business, the Catholic Daughter of the Quarter was announced and the honor went to Claudia Schoener, who serves as circle of love chairman and also as a kitchen team leader. The court also voted to make a monetary donation to the Hurricane Sandy Fund through International CDA. The state convention was discussed and members voted to send 13 delegates, provide two door prizes for the event, donate a silent auction goodie basket and send a monetary donation toward the gift for the retiring state regent.

Curtis shared information on Relay for Life scheduled for April 26 at West High School. Members were encouraged to form a team and participate in the event if possible.
