THUMBS-UP

Thumbs-up to Kimberly Johnson, of Sugar Land - daughter of Cathy Williams and Jimmie Williams and granddaughter of Jo Glass, all of Victoria - who completed the Houston Marathon Sunday with a time of 3:48:04.

Reynolds, Victoria

Thumbs-up to the young man who helped me after my battery died at Victoria East High School. As I was opening my hood, he asked if I was having problems. I told him yes my battery was dead, and he said, "I will be right there." He got his truck and came and jumped my car. I don't know who this young man is. I didn't get his name. His parents should be really proud of the young man they raised. It restores my hope that their generation still has hope. God bless this young man. It makes me proud to live in this great community.

Sara, Victoria

Thumbs-up and thanks a million to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Lavaca County Committee for raising over $1 million for Lavaca County in nine years. Thank you for your dedicated work. Thank you to the people who gave so freely.

See you on the track!

Eilien, Hallettsville

THUMBS-UP

Thumbs-up to everyone who will take part in celebrations on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Thumbs-up to the Parikh family, who went to Breezy Point, Queens, N.Y. to deliver money raised in the Crossroads to families who lost their homes to Hurricane Sandy in October. And thumbs-up to all the area residents who gave to this relief effort.

Thumbs-up to Robert Neiderhouse, of Goliad, who provided symphony tickets for hundreds of children before his death on Dec. 8. Thank you for sharing the joy of music and the arts with the next generation.

Thumbs-up to the Lower Colorado River Authority's plan to build a new reservoir and add 100,000 acre-feet to the region's water supply by 2017. After years of drought, we need to have a practical plan in place to protect the area's water and agriculture.

Thumbs-up and good luck to Victoria County Court-at-Law No. 1 Judge Laura A. Weiser, who is retiring to accept a position with the Texas Center for the Judiciary in Austin.

Thumbs-up to Huvar's Artisan Market and Catering for expanding their hours to open earlier and offer breakfast and coffee.

THUMBS-DOWN

Thumbs-down to Lance Armstrong for years of cheating by using performance-enhancing drugs and lying about it.
