Charles Taylor was the only survivor of a two-vehicle fatal crash late Friday night that claimed the lives of two drivers near Yoakum.
Taylor, 29, of Cuero, was in the passenger seat next to driver Brett Harris, 33, of Yoakum, in a Chevrolet Silverado when another pickup collided with them.
"I'm really glad he survived," said his mother, Sandra Taylor. "It's not good to see your child this way, but compared to the other boys - I'm sorry they didn't make it."
The other driver, Hunter Kane Mraz, 20, of Cuero, was driving a Ford F-150.
According to the Department of Public Safety report, Mraz was driving recklessly without a seat belt, traveling south on U.S. Highway 77 Alternate about five miles south of Yoakum when he crossed the center line and collided with Harris' vehicle.
Taylor was taken to Citizens Medical Center, where he was later transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. His mother said she was with her son at the hospital, where he is being treated for facial cuts, a broken wrist and other injuries.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the DPS accident report.
Harris' family could not be reached Saturday. A member of the Mraz family said she did not want to talk.
Trooper Dustin Slovacek investigated the crash, which occurred at 11:56 p.m. Friday in DeWitt County.
