It was June 1980 when Fannin's Coleto Creek Power plant first fired up its operations, spokeswoman Julie Vitek said. More than 30 years later, it continues going strong, providing 677 megawatts of electric generation capacity to the Lone Star State's ERCOT grid.

But that isn't all.

With its $307,213,630 in taxable value, the power plant, which employs about 85 people, also tops the list of Goliad County's top taxpayers.

Vitek said Coleto Creek's work spans even beyond plant doors. The company strives to make an impact on the Crossroads.

The plant sponsors a number of area organizations, she said. That includes the Goliad Education Foundation, an initiative that funds educational enrichment programs not covered by regular school budgets and Quilts for Kids, which provides homemade quilts to children hospitalized with illnesses such as cancer.

Another initiative, Ready Set Swim, goes hand in hand with the plant itself.

Ready Set Swim offers free swimming lessons to Goliad County children, Vitek said, noting that, when the company created a 3,100-acre lake to provide cooling water to the plant, that lake was integrated into a Goliad County park.

Today the park draws more than 300,000 visitors a year for activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, jet and water skiing.

"All the key summertime activities," Vitek said.
