UHV Softball to begin play this weekend

The 10th-ranked University of Houston-Victoria softball team will open the 2013 season with five exhibition games in the Galveston College Invitational on Feb. 1-2.

The Jaguars open play on Friday with an 11 a.m. contest with Temple College and then face Independence Community College of Kansas at 3 p.m.

Three games are on tap for Saturday with the Jaguars taking on Kilgore College at 9 a.m., Seminole at 1 p.m. and McLennan at 5 p.m.

The Jaguars earned their second trip to the NAIA National Championships last year and finished with a 40-10 record.

Ten players, including six starters, return from last year's squad. Among the returnees are all-conference selections Brittany Arredondo (first team), Dawn Villegas (second team), and Ashley Shannon (second team). Also returning are Jena West, Morley Moehrig, Ashley Winegeart, Kristina Droz, Isabella Soto, Alicia Fikac and Megan Carter.

The Jaguars will open the regular season at home on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when they host Texas Southern University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
