Shawn Miller outdistanced his competition with a great series to take the weekly honors while competing in the Sundowner League.

In spite of two misses in the three games, Miller rolled 29 strikes to post games of 262, 256, and 258 for a tremendous 776 series.

If he could have carried one more strike instead of a miss, Miller could have bowled his first career 800 series.

Competing in the same league as Miller, Steve Dickinson rolled the second high total with three consistent games contributing towards a 718 set.

Also breaking the 700 mark last week were Tom Crowe with a 257-711, Steve Zeplin 268-708, and Mike Stacy 705.

Other noteworthy scores for the men were Darryl Mergele (256-691), Abel Garcia (684), David Flores (680), Mike Osterson (268-677/651), Kim Blake (663), Mike Wortham (658), William Jackson (256), Charles Aiken (256), and David Matthews (255).

Lynda Mikulec was high for the women with a nice 616 series rolled during Sugar & Spice League competition.

Mikulec posted individual games of 224, 200, and 192 for her total.

Samantha Wharton bowled the second high total with a nice 231 game helping towards a 605 series.

Christine Speer with a 222-603 and Lori Heil with a 602 also broke the 600 mark.

Other nice scores for the women were Carri lee 589, Joanna Sanders 233, and Pat Robles 226.

Vera Cruz Restaurant bowlers for the week were Shawn Miller 776 (Sundowners) and Beverly Wittenburg 715 (Sugar & Spice).

A reminder that the entry deadline for the Victoria Women's City Tournament is Feb. 8 at midnight.

The changes for this year's tournament have been made in an effort to increase participation.

If you bowl in a league, it is for competition and camaraderie. You can find the same thing in the local city tournament.

Another local tournament that is drawing near is the Lions' District 2-S4 West Bowl-A-Thon. Proceeds from the Bowl-A-Thon benefit the Lions Eye Bank of Texas at Baylor College of Medicine.

Entry forms may be obtained at the Century Lanes desk. The date of the tournament is Feb. 9. Registration begins at noon and bowling starts at 1 p.m.

The deadline for the Texas State USBC Open being held in San Antonio is Feb. 15. Get your team together and submit your choice of dates.

The PBA Tour will feature the Chris Paul PBA League All Stars tournament this Sunday with a later then usual starting time of 3 p.m. on ESPN.
