Food service inspections for June 19-26

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING JUNE 28

Beijing Buffet, 339 Calhoun Plaza, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 45. Improper cold-hold temperature. Improper hot-hold temperature. Wash hands before preparing food. Do not peel potatoes on trash can. Cover food in the walk-in. Do not store food in thank-you bags. Use food-grade storage bags. Date-label food in coolers. Need hot water at back hand sink. Buffet tables not holding at the proper temperatures. Address problem with flies. The manager needs to educate employees on hand washing, proper food temperatures, cross-contamination, etc. All food surfaces need to be cleaned and sanitized. Five facility or equipment violations.

Gazebo Restaurant, 2100 N. state Highway 35 Bypass, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 31. Improper cold-hold temperature. Wash hands in hand washing sink. Employee drinks need to be in spill-proof container. Wash hands before putting gloves on and handling ready-to-eat foods. Date-label all potentially hazardous foods and ready-to-eat foods in cooler. Repair faucet at the three-compartment sink. Walk-in cooler and freezer freezing up. Build-up of ice present. Clean the ice machine. Keep beans, rice, dry goods at least 6 inches off the ground in dry storage. Two facility or equipment violations.

Taqueria Las Fuentes, 9345 Farm-to-Market Road 1593, Lolita. Demerits: 28. Wash hands between foods, raw and ready-to-eat. Employee wore the same gloves the entire time of the inspection. Wash hands between handling raw meat and ready-to-eat lettuce. Date-label prepared food. Paper towels and a lid were in the hand sink. Keep the hand sink clear. Need soap at the hand sink. Use a licensed pest control only. Need accurate thermometers. Four facility or equipment violations.

The Fire Pit, 338 Nursery Road, Nursery. Demerits: 27. Improper cold-hold temperature. Wash hands upon entering the mobile unit. Use gloves when handling onions and pickles. Date-label food with a seven-day use-by date. Hot water not working. Need a water sample. Refrigerator not holding at 41 degrees. Address problem with flies. Wash, rinse and sanitize dishes in the mobile unit. Permit has been suspended for the above violations. Health department will return to reopen mobile unit when violations have been corrected. Three facility or equipment violations.

Shell Mini Mart, 4717 state Highway 35, Palacios. Demerits: 25. Employees must have cups with lids and straws. Label the ice bags. Dispose of expired medicines. Date-label the ready-to-eat foods. Keep paper towels at hand sink. Address problem with flies and rodent droppings. Three facility or equipment violations.

Dragon House, 202 S. U.S. Highway 77-A, Yoakum. Demerits: 21. Employee drinks need a lid and straw. Cover food in cooler. Cannot store container of lemons in ice used for beverages. Use a food-grade storage container. Need paper towels at hand-washing sink. Address problem with roaches. Need thermometer in the tabletop. Three facility or equipment violations.

La Terraza Mexican Grill, 300 N. U.S. Highway 77-A, Yoakum. Demerits: 21. Improper cold-hold temperature. Employee drinks need a lid and straw. Store cellphones away from food preparation areas. Cover food in the walk-in cooler. Date-label cooked ready-to-eat foods in the walk-in cooler. Hand-washing sink needs to be installed in remodeled bar area. Label spray bottles. Keep ice scoop on a clean, sanitized surface. Clean the ice machine. Three facility or equipment violations.

Circle R Drive-In, 8945 Farm-to-Market Road 1593, Lolita. Demerits: 17. Remove the bucket of ice being kept in the ice machine. Keep time on food in warmer if not holding at 135 degrees. Need soap and paper towels at the hand sink, restroom and back sink. Clean the ice machine. Permit needs to be visible. There was a change of ownership. Employees must use hair restraints. Three facility or equipment violations.

Crazy Fisherman, 1109 state Highway 35, Point Comfort. Demerits: 16. Improper cold-hold temperature. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Date-label all potentially hazardous foods, cooked and ready-to-eat foods in cooler. Address problem with flies. One facility or equipment violation.

Taqueria Mazatlan, 150 N. Highway 35 Bypass, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 16. Improper cold-hold temperature. Cover all items in coolers. Keep raw meat on bottom shelf in cooler. Raw chicken should go below raw fish and beef. Clean and sanitize cutting board, knives and can opener. Use scoops with handles for dry goods. Weather-strip the back door. Keep paper goods at least 6 inches off the ground. One facility or equipment violation.

JR's, 611 S. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 15. Improper cold hold temperature. Wash hands in hand-washing sink only. Refrigerator in kitchen is not holding at 41 degrees. Do not put anything in hand-washing sink. One facility or equipment violation.

Stevens Nursing Home, 204 Walter St., Yoakum. Demerits: 15. Improper cold-hold temperature. Improper hot-hold temperature. Water supply at the hand sink by the dishwasher is not working. Keep hand-washing sink accessible. Two facility or equipment violations.

China Inn No. 3, 915 N. Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 13. Improper cold-hold temperature. Cover all foods in the cooler. Date-label all cooked ready-to-eat foods in coolers.

Inteplast Cafeteria, 101 Inteplast Cafeteria, Lolita. Demerits: 11. Do not reuse single-use gloves. Date-label prepared foods. Store cleaners, mouthwash and medicines away from food. One facility or equipment violation.
