·Victoria County Commissioners enacted a burn ban Monday that will last for 90 days unless revoked sooner; Violation of the burn ban could result in a $500 fine. There is no ban on aerial fireworks and Saxet Lake will be open from 4 to 11 p.m. for fireworks.

·Calhoun County Commissioners Court enacted a burn ban Monday on all outside burning, except household trash, in unincorporated areas of the county. It's that time of summer when everything is speckled with red, white and blue and stars and stripes.

It's the Fourth of July, and it's time to scatter to the outskirts of Victoria to play with sparklers and watch fountains of sparks fly through the air and small fireworks skitter across the ground in a rainbow of colors. And once the clock strikes midnight Friday, the firework stands will shut their doors, and sales will end.

This is your last-minute guide to buying fireworks to celebrate the nation's anniversary of independence. We bought one of the variety packs available from the Big Tex Fireworks stand on U.S. Highway 77 north of town, and salesman Tommy Burger painted a picture for us of what to expect from our frugal purchase.

"These are some of the more popular packs because they have fountains, sparklers and Roman candles," he said.

Inside his yellow, wooden trailer, shelves are filled with colorful tubes, neatly wrapped boxes and cardboard cylinders with the names of insects, snakes and more. Here's the breakdown of what fireworks we got in the One For The Money package.•  Dancing Butterflies - Fountain that shoots sparks into the air that look like butterflies fluttering around and butterflies dancing around on the ground.
