Gulf of Mexico shrimp season to open mid-July

July 3, 2013 at 2:03 a.m.

The Gulf of Mexico's commercial shrimp season opens 30 minutes after sunset July 15 for state and federal waters.

The Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department evaluated biological, social and economic information to decide on the opening date. The goal is to maximize industry and public benefits.

The purpose of the closed Gulf season is to protect brown shrimp during their emigration from the bays to the Gulf of Mexico so they reach a larger, more valuable size before they are harvested. This also prevents waste caused when smaller individuals are discarded.

Federal waters, 9 to 200 nautical miles offshore, and state waters will open at the same time. The National Marine Fisheries Service adopted rules compatible with those of Texas.
