Thumbs-up, thumbs-down; it's your choice

July 5, 2013 at 2:05 a.m.

THUMBS-DOWN

Thumbs way down to the Texas Legislature for sneaking in a retirement increase for themselves on another bill. The Texas Employees Retirement System and the Legislature have not given us a raise since 2001. Pork barrel politics is alive and well in Texas.

Mary, Cuero

Thumbs-down to our local television group. I do not know what kind of schedule you anchors have, but please spare us the agony of having to tell us which one of you is off tonight. Seems like one of you is off every other night, so we do not need to know that unless that is your breaking news.

Emilio, Victoria

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS-UP

Thumbs-up to our nation's Founding Fathers for their brave decision to fight for freedom.

Thumbs-up and thank you to Avery Vermillion and Bob Jackson for their service in the U.S. Navy. We are glad Vermillion was able to spend the Fourth of July on leave with his family and friends.

Thumbs-up to the Texas Transportation Commission for approving the funding to construct an overpass at Airline Road and Loop 463. We are glad the state is supporting work to make traffic in Victoria safer.

Thumbs-up to the Gulf of Mexico's commercial shrimp season opening 30 minutes after sunset July 15 for state and federal waters. We look forward to enjoying this year's catch.

Thumbs-up to the discovery and return of a sign that was painted in 1908 and has been missing from Fossati's Delicatessen since the 1960s.

Thumbs-up to the winners of the annual Coleto Creek Park photo contest. Congratulations on the amazing photographs.

Thumbs-up to the city of Victoria for receiving a federal Community Development Block Grant of $560,000 and adding $61,000. We are glad the council is working to improve our city for all residents.

Thumbs-up to the opening of the new Golden Corral restaurant.

THUMBS-DOWN

Thumbs-down to the lack of rainfall that has lead to the need for a burn ban and water restrictions.
