Art Corner: New classes offered

Well, we had lots of activity at the Victoria Art League this month.

We have a new roof over the gallery, new doors and landing on the classroom and lots of new classes. New classes that have not started and can still be registered for this month are Beginners Pottery - which I am teaching starting July 22; call 361-649-8309 to register - and children's classes with Michele Evans; call 361-649-8092 to register.

Yesterday, I was there, and we had classes already going in three areas: stained glass in the pottery room, digital photography in the classroom and Paint the Town in the gallery. Busy, busy.

William Vickery plans to have follow-up classes for stained glass in the future and more beginner classes, so call him if you would like to take a class sometime. He can be reached at 361-245-2416.

Jim Feig will have an advanced digital photography class starting Thursday and another beginning class starting July 16. Contact him at 361-576-0578.

Sonny Timme continues to teach adult classes for beginners or those with experience on how to improve. Call for information at 361-578-8722.

Of course, Paint the Town will have new classes, and you can contact Eunice Collins at 361-576-4043.

Coming soon will be woodcarving with Lem Smith in October. Dalhart Windberg will have an oil painting workshop coming in November. Other offerings are in the works, so stay tuned.

Along with all that is going on with our classes, Easley Roofing finished installing a new roof over the gallery, and new doors were installed in the classroom along with a landing and new stairs in front. Those were a couple of bigger items on our "bucket list."

Once again, there are so many people, foundations and organizations that have made it possible to restore and repair this historic landmark. We want to especially mention the hotel occupancy tax funds from the city of Victoria, the Trull Foundation, Wood Family Memorial Trust and the York Trust - and others that I did not mention since I was not sure if they want to remain anonymous - and all our Victoria and area friends for your generous donations to these projects.

We have come a long, long way and will continue to improve this fine old building.

Now, we are turning our attention to the lighting inside the gallery. Our old spotlights need replacing along with better lighting in the gallery for the new classes we have going on and to highlight our wonderful artwork on the walls. Come by and visit us from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 905 S. Bridge St.

Thanks, Victoria, for all of your support.

Our monthly meeting will be July 14. Christine Thieme will demonstrate carving an image for block printing. Before the meeting at 2 p.m., a reception will be in the gallery for Thieme as our Artist of the Month. She will have some of her prints, sculpture and pottery on display, so come and see her work this month.

My display as last month's Artist of the Month will be up until July 14, so this is your last chance to come see it before it comes down.

My lovely wife, Susan, is the new president of the Art League, but I will continue to write the Art Corner each month. Come see our improvements, the great artwork on the walls and just visit. Hope to see you soon.

Bill Bauer is a past president of the Victoria Art League.
