Editor's note: This is the eighth in an ongoing series looking at the Crossroads' top taxpayers.

It was 1984 when Marvin Boedeker, armed with an entrepreneurial spirit and some industry know-how, first got Boedeker Plastics off the ground in Shiner. And ever since, he said, growth has been slow and steady.

Today, the company employs about 120 people. Not only that, but at $10,797.85 in assessed value, M C Boedeker Real Estate - better known as Boedeker Plastics - tops the list of Lavaca County's top taxpayers in terms of real property.

Boedeker described his company as "a lumberyard for engineering materials," explaining that it keeps places like machine shops and fabricators supplied with necessary materials such as tubing. An on-site machine shop also allows it to build plastic parts for customers worldwide.

The work doesn't end there.

Boedeker said his company strives to give back to the community, supporting not only Shiner's schools but also the fire department, police department and most other organizations - and there are a lot of them - that enter through the doors daily.

"We decided about 10 years ago that we had to keep it to the local stuff," he said of the charitable giving, noting that calls still come in from all over - even out of state - from those looking for help. "We do a lot of giving back, but you can't support them all."

Boedeker credits the plastics company's ongoing growth partly to its unique position in the market. Its products play a role in industries such as oil and gas, electronics, food and beverage and so on, he said, and its products go worldwide.

While that can be a good thing, it also has its drawbacks.

"We don't depend a lot on the local economy. Ours is probably a more global approach," he said. "And that's been a little on the stagnant side. Growth this year was not as good as we'd like to see it."

One other element plays a key role in how Boedeker Plastics got where it is today, however. Namely: its employees.

Boedeker said the people with his company take pride not only in what they do but also in providing quality customer service. And that makes a real difference.

"I tell people all the time that if you just do what's right and take care of people like they ought to be taken care of, you can be successful in anything," he said. "It's the little things."
