Goliad moves forward with appeal to TCEQ
GOLIAD - The Goliad County Commissioners continue to fight to keep uranium mining from coming to the county.
On Monday, the court unanimously approved a contract authorizing attorney firm Blackburn & Carter to appeal the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ruling on allowing uranium mining in Goliad County.
The county had already approved having the law firm represent the county, said County Judge David Bowman, but the contract approved Monday prevents the county from being charged for representation, which will come at no cost.
In December, the Environmental Protection Agency issued an aquifer exemption permit for Uranium Energy Corp, which was the last hurdle to uranium mining in Goliad County for the company.
Residents and commissioners, however, have expressed concern that uranium mining pollutes water sources.
In other action, the county enacted a 90-day burn ban, effective immediately, because of the drought levels in Goliad County. Precinct 4 Commissioner Ted Long was the only commissioner to vote against the ban.
