The Weesatche couple found dead Thursday morning was the result of a murder-suicide, officials said Monday.
Ida Reitz, 77, was shot by her husband, Dennis Reitz, 78, before he shot and killed himself, said Goliad Sheriff Kirby Brumby.
Dennis Reitz left a suicide note claiming responsibility for his wife's death, Brumby said.
Brumby, who said he knew the couple personally, is not sure of the motive.
"They seemed to be content with each other. They both liked to hunt and fish and work cows. Their health - both had been to the doctor recently and were clear. They were not financially strapped, as far as I knew," Brumby said.
The couple had been married for about 10 years, Brumby said, getting married after each of their previous spouses had died.
Neither Ida Reitz nor Dennis Reitz had a criminal history in Texas, according to the Department of Public Safety records.
The preliminary autopsy reports released by Central Texas Autopsy in Lockhart confirm the findings, said Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Judge Steve Kennedy.
A family member who found the bodies at the couple's home in the 2000 block of Farm-to-Market Road 884 called 911 at 6:26 a.m.
They were pronounced dead by Kennedy about 7:30 a.m. the same morning.
