DRUGs over the state

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, more than 9 million pounds of marijuana has been seized statewide since April 2006.

More than 300 pounds of marijuana were confiscated in a traffic stop Friday.

About 9:25 a.m., two Victoria senior patrol officers stopped a 2008 silver Dodge Caravan traveling north on U.S. Highway 59 near the Burroughsville Road exit.

The officers were patrolling the area as part of Operation Border Star, a Texas Department of Public Safety initiative to decrease border crimes.

A mother and her son and daughter from San Juan were arrested Friday in connection with the drug seizure, according to a news release from the Victoria Police Department.

Alma Andrade, 37; Michael Guerrero, 18; and Maria Guerrero, 17, were all charged with possession of between 50 to 2,000 pounds of marijuana.

The drugs were found in a back compartment of the vehicle under the seats.

Four children also in the vehicle were released to family members.

Victoria Police Chief J.J. Craig praised the work of Senior Patrol Officers Joshua Vaclavik and Michael Leet, saying the drug seizure was a job well done.

"They're very observant," Craig said. "They picked up on the fact that something didn't look right, and ultimately, their investigation proved they were right."

The estimated street value of the marijuana is $127,000.

Possession of between 50 to 2,000 pounds of marijuana is a second-degree felony and is punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to Texas state legislature.
