School Nurse Conference registration open

Registration is open for the 18th Annual School Nurse Conference planned for 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. Aug. 8 in Victoria College's Health Sciences Center, Room 130.

The conference is for registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, school counselors, special education teachers and others interested in school health. The registration fee is $60 and includes instructional materials and lunch.

Sponsored by Victoria College, Region III Education Service Center and Victoria school district's School Health Services, the conference seeks to improve the quality of school-age student health by increasing the knowledge and skill of nurses and others related to medical and emotional issues in school-aged children.

Topics will include current information on transmission-based infection prevention and control, the role of the mental health counselor, mental health first aid and concussion and nursing practice for the school nurse office.

Presenters will be:

Dr. John McNeill, Internal Medicine at Twin Fountains Medical Clinics

L. Murphey Stuart, registered nurse, health services coordinator for the Victoria school district

Tracy Chase, counselor and team leader for Child and Adolescent Services and case manager for Child and Adolescent Services at Gulf Bend Center in Victoria

Shauna Holder, Gulf Bend Center in Victoria , who assesses, plans and coordinates programs designed to ensure the safety of mentally ill and disabled children of all ages

Carl Voskamp, Victoria College Emergency Medical Services Program coordinator, who plans, promotes, coordinates and teaches emergency care classes in Victoria College's service area

Melinda Hester, lead consultant for nursing practice at the Texas Board of Nursing
