After nearly a year of dodging falling bricks and scaffolding, walkers will soon be able to use the sidewalk out side the Victoria County Bridge Street Annex.
Victoria County Commissioners voted Monday on the sixth payment to the project's contractor, Robert Adkins Masonry.
Architect Rawley McCoy said he expects the work to be complete by mid-August.
The original contract was for $181,890 to the contractor, Robert Adkins Masonry and McCoy, the architect. After $22,770 in change orders, the grand total is expected to be $204,660.
County Judge Don Pozzi had only one word for Monday's announcement: "Hallelujah!"
"All of this occurred because of some defects in the original construction," Pozzi said. "We're very happy that we're at the closing stages of the project."
The building houses the adult probation office, the county credit union, the district attorney's office, county tax office and the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission office.
The work began in October after bricks began falling off the building that summer.
McCoy said the repairs were focused on relief angles for the brick, something "to take the load off the foundation."
The angles on the original building, made with ungalvanized steel in the 1970s, had rusted and put stress on the brick and mortar.
The building is three stories but designed with capacity to go up to 10 stories, McCoy said.
"If it would ever be added on to, we would need to do this," he said.
Pozzi said the county is pricing letters to replace the missing ones on the front and side of the building.
