Walker squeezes by Hatter Jr. for weekly high score

July 17, 2013 at 2:17 a.m.

It was a close battle for the weekly high series with Josh Walker posting the weekly high score while competing in the Summer Sunday Strikers League.

Walker edged Gary Hatter Jr. by one pin, when he rolled high games of 245 and 233 to help total a 671 series. Hatter Jr. was competing in the Rolling Thunder League, when he blasted the pins for a 259 score in his third game, contributing towards a 670 series.

David Dye and Steven Brinegar rolled nice individual games of 255 and 246 respectively.

The ladies scored well during Rolling Thunder play with Morgan Matula leading with a 213 game helping towards a 592 set.

Samantha Wharton rolled an outstanding individual game of 250 and finished with a 585 series for second high.

Other nice individual games by the ladies were Olivia Jackson 229 and Joanna McNary 223.

A couple of weeks ago I published the names of local bowlers who have won a title in the Texas State USBC Annual Championship. This week I will note of four individuals who scored exceptionally well in the state tournament but did not win a title.

In 2001, Steve Dickinson bowled a tremendous 790 scratch series and placed 4th in Division I Singles. This is the highest scratch series bowled by a local bowler in the state tournament.

Larry Eakins bowled a 300 game during the state tournament at the Stadium Bowl in Houston in the late 1970's. Chris Peters was the second local bowler to score a perfect game during the state tournament in the Houston area. The third bowler to achieve perfection was David S. Flores, who bowled his 300 game in the doubles event in Austin during the 2002 tournament.

It was great bowling, and they set a goal to match local bowlers in future state tournaments.
