Elizabeth Smart will be the guest speaker at the DeTar Healthcare System's Healthy Woman program at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12.
She will discuss overcoming adversity.
The keynote address and dinner at the Victoria Community Center mark the fifth anniversary of the program.
"Our Healthy Woman advisory board puts in many hours to make sure this event is truly an inspirational girls night out," said Judith Barefield, director of marketing at DeTar Healthcare System.
This year's event will include free health screenings beginning at 4:30 p.m., a women's exposition featuring area businesses and a raffle.
Smart's abduction and recovery continue to motivate parents, law enforcement and leaders worldwide to focus on child safety.
Smart emphasizes the role of vigilant, everyday people in finding missing children.
She will share her story and discuss topics such as overcoming extreme adversity and preventing one's past from dictating one's future.
The DeTar Healthcare System chapter of Healthy Woman launched in 2008. The series includes free monthly seminars, health fairs, education programs and interactive events.
The goal of the program is to empower women of all ages to make informed health and well-being decisions for themselves and their family members.
"We are excited to bring Ms. Smart to our community and hope those attending will find her story, while traumatic, to be filled with messages of strength and encouragement," Barefield said.
