Running a city is a complicated task. It requires strong leadership, integrity, coordination skills, the ability to balance priorities and citizens willing to be invested and involved in the process.
Thankfully, Victoria has plenty of citizens who are ready and willing to take part in the important task of keeping our hometown running smoothly. We saw evidence of this in the recent influx of volunteers who wanted to take part in the city's planning commission. Seven residents volunteered to fill the three seats on the commission. At the last City Council meeting, two of those positions were filled by John Hyak, a department manager at Formosa Plastics who previously gave up his seat on the commission to run for the City Council District 3 position, and Bruce Woods, an insurance salesman. The remaining seat will be voted on during the next City Council meeting in August.
In addition to the planning commission, the City Council also appointed members to fill positions on the Victoria Development Commission, Health Commission, housing finance, the Sales Tax Development Corp., Board of Health and the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission.
We applaud all of the residents who applied for these seats. Our city, just like any other, depends on more than paid employees and political leaders. We also need dedicated residents who are prepared to get their hands dirty and lead in volunteer positions. Whether they serve on the planning commission and offer recommendations directly to the City Council or simply take the initiative to pick up trash in their neighborhood, involved citizens are the most important part of the effort to make our community a great place to live.
To those who have been appointed to community leadership positions, thank you for your dedication to Victoria. As you make decisions and present recommendations to the Council, please always do your best to decide based on what is right for our community and its residents. Our city's development and future depends on leaders like you and the decisions you make.
Most of all, we applaud all of the volunteers who give of their time to help others. Our city is a wonderful place, and your actions are part of what make it that way. Thank you for all you do. We look forward to seeing more good things as you continue your work and share the joy of selfless giving with others.
