Wild Turkey coming to Cuero

CUERO - Cory Thamm has come fill circle.
From being a bartender at Cactus Canyon in Victoria to running a liquor store in Cuero, Thamm now has plans to open the Wild Turkey Bar & Grill in downtown Cuero.
Thamm and his wife, Wendy, have purchased the former Troubadours Dance Hall & Saloon at 144 E. Main St. and are in the process of converting it into their new business endeavor.
"We've always enjoyed going to different venues to see live music, to enjoy the food, cocktails, company, the atmosphere," said Thamm.
"I want to bring the people that I always traveled to see down here for my friends to see."
The live music won't be restricted to country but will include blues and rock, and there is much more in the works, Thamm said.
"In this area, there are a shortage of places to go. We don't want to be one dimensional," he said. "We want you to be able to play pool, watch a football game on a big screen or whatever.
"We are going to try to have something on stage every evening - karaoke, open mic, live music."
Thamm said he is open to hosting a variety of activities at the bar from comedians to adult education classes.
Remodeling of the circa 1920s building that once housed J.C. Penney has begun to expand available seating, and a kitchen is being added, Thamm said.
"Eventually, we hope to be open all day for lunch and dinner," he said. "We'll have pub-style food - burgers and dogs."
Thamm hopes to have the kitchen operational within the first month of opening which he anticipates will be the first weekend in August.
The Wild Turkey will feature a full bar as well with a wide variety of liquor, beer and wine.
There is also room available to rent for meetings or small gatherings.
Thamm has been looking forward to opening his own place for some time.
"It's something I've always thought about doing," he said. "We're excited."
In addition to Cactus Canyon, Thamm also tended bar at Dodge City and Johnny Carino's and spent time as assistant manager at Barney's in Victoria.
He managed Ranch House Spirits and Gifts in Cuero for about a half dozen years.
"This seemed like a natural transition to go back to the roots of the industry for me," Thamm said.
Choosing the name for the new business was also a perfect fit.
Thamm has been associated with the Cuero Turkeyfest for more than a decade, including training Ruby Begonia.
"Turkeys have been a big part of both Cuero's history as well as my own," he said. "It just felt like a natural way to go."
