Art Corner: We are Gettin' It Done!
Well, as this month ends, so does my time as the president of the Victoria Art League.
We have accomplished much during my three years as president with one of my main objectives coming to pass: making the Victoria Art League a name more recognized in the city and area. It is a place where people can come and see a variety of fine visual art on the walls of our gallery or attend a class in photography, pottery, various painting mediums, stained glass, wood carving, children's classes, youth classes and others or just spend an evening with friends and "paint the town" in our fine, old historic building.
We also had recognized artists come in to teach workshops during the year and had some great demonstrations by a variety of artists at our monthly meetings.
We meet at 2 p.m. the second Sunday of each month.
I will be demonstrating this month how I create my face mugs in clay on the wheel, how I create and add the face to the cup and how to pull and attach the handle.
We feature a member artist each month, and I will be the artist of the month for June and will have some of my pottery and sculpture as well as some of my watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings on display, so come at 2 p.m. June 9 for a brief reception in the gallery followed by my demonstration in clay.
Also in my tenure as president, we have been able to make significant progress toward restoring our historic building by replacing our leaky roof and restoring the windows on the third floor of our apartments. We rebuilt our front porch as well as the stairs and columns on the back porch, both of which needed replacing badly. We strengthened the roof over our covered patio, leveled the foundation under our classroom as well as the floor and added new flooring to the room. We worked on the roof and put in new restored windows, and we are in the process of adding new doors and painting it all. We continue to improve our landscaping, which, three years ago, had none in front.
We are now in the process as I write this of replacing the rotted wood and reroofing the gallery area, which has leaked for years.
In the planning stage is a major overhaul of our lighting in the gallery, which really needs it, with improved lighting and new spotlights for the paintings. We will see how soon we can start on this depending on how much our building fund is depleted once the roof is finished, which will be, of course, a sizeable amount.
We are still plagued by leaks in the pottery room roof but hope to have that taken care of soon.
As you can see, we have accomplished much during this time, and the only way we could have done it is through the generous support of all of you who have supported us thus far.
Also, thanks to the members and husbands and wives of members who worked hard during this time to make these things happen.
We still have much to do, so thanks in advance for your continued financial support, and thank you so much to all in the Victoria area, both individual and corporate, for being there for us.
