Generals stay hot at plate in win over Marshals (video)
Video: VIDEO: Generals defeat Texas Marshals 6-4
Romeo Cortina wasn't feeling anything special. He was just confident.
The right fielder from Sam Houston State went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate as the Victoria Generals (5-1) finished off a sweep of the Texas Marshals (2-4) in a 6-4 decision at Riverside Stadium.
"My confidence is really high right now," Cortina said. "I know I'm swinging good. If you go up there with confidence, you'll get a hit. If you don't, then you'll probably go hitless."
Cortina wasn't the only General to have a great day at the plate. Jacob Hubert was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double and four RBI and Jordan Camel was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
"I went to the batters box thinking 'keep it simple,'" Cortina said. "And look for pitches I can handle."
It was Hubert's double in the second inning that got the scoring started. After David Paiz Jr. scored on a bases loaded walk, Hubert drilled a pitch to the wall in left center field, scoring three runs, including Cortina, who reached base on a single.
"Jacob (Hubert) had a big double in the second," said Generals coach Stephen Flora. "That four-run inning really opened it up for us. The guys were able to play a little more loose after that."
The Marshals had just one hit off of Generals' starter Matt McClain until the fourth inning when Gevon Jackson and Chabrielle Pizzarro led off with back to back singles. They'd later score on a three-run triple by Zachery Marberry .
However, with no outs and a runner at third, McClain ended the threat with three straight strikeouts. He'd finish the night with three runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
Paiz not only had a strong night at the plate, he also struck out three batters in the eighth inning.
"He is just as good on the mound as he is at the plate," Flora said.
The Marshals made it a one-run game in the fifth inning with an unearned run scored by Greg Marten.
But the Generals didn't allow the game to stay close for long.
Camel drove in Cortina on a single to left field and Camel later scored on a right field single by Hubert.
William Breland drove in the fourth run of the night for Texas with a triple to right field, but the Marshals were held scoreless in the final three innings to secure the 6-4 win by the Generals.
"It's really important to win at home," Flora said. "We're playing really good baseball right now and if we continue that we'll keep getting wins. Now, we'll be even more comfortable at home.
