St. Mary's Parish Picnic set in Hallettsville

Roy Cavaretta, of Hallettsville, presents the pen and ink drawing of St. Mary's Church to Msg. John Peters of the Sacred Heart Parish. The drawing will be part of the auction at Sunday's St. Mary's Parish Picnic and prints of the original will also be available for sale.

The annual St. Mary's Parish Picnic will be Sunday at the parish hall, 1648 Farm-to-Market Road 340, west of Hallettsville.

A Mass will be at 9:15 a.m. followed by a meal of St. Mary's stew, sausage and all the trimmings at 10:30 a.m. Adult plates are $8.

The celebration also features live music from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Texas Sound Check, Tony Janak Band and Red Ravens.

There will also be games, a country store, train ride and a fish pond.

The auction that begins at 1:30 p.m. will include antiques, handmade quilts, livestock and arts and crafts.

One of the highlights of the auction is a pen and ink drawing of the church by Roy Cavaretta.

Additional prints of the original drawing also will be sold.

The first St. Mary's church was built in 1840, and the current church was constructed in 1895.

It was one of 10 churches built when the Diocese of Galveston was formed, the first Diocese in Texas.

It is a mission church of the Sacred Heart Parish in Hallettsville in the Diocese of Victoria.
