Hearing a loud boom shortly after midnight Sunday, 19-year-old Daniel Aguilar ran outside to see his neighbor's garage on fire.

By the time he got back inside to call 911 and wake his parents up, the house in the 600 block of County Road 254 in Ganado was engulfed in flames and threatening his own home.

"It was spreading so fast. ... I jumped the fence and started banging on the front door and yelling, but no one came. Soon, the fire was too hot, and we had to walk away," Aguilar remembered, saying he and his father then grabbed a water hose to douse the flames starting to singe the side of their own yard.

Though no one was injured in the fire, the home was a complete loss, said Ganado Fire Chief Bernard Scott.

The family was not home at the time of the fire, Scott said, and firefighters immediately went to work extinguishing the fire on the houses on either side of the original home on fire.

Juanita Aguilar, David Aguilar's mother, credits the firefighters with saving her own home - the fire singeing the back of the house and the intense heat busting the glass of two windows.

"I was so scared. ... It was a big fire, just look up there at the trees," she said, pointing up to the burned branches of the trees hovering over the home that was burned.

The family who lost their home will receive emergency assistance, including a two-night hotel stay and basic food and clothing needs, Linda May of the Victoria Red Cross said.

That family was not available for comment Sunday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Scott said.

The fire took about an hour to put out with assistance from the Edna Fire Department.
