MEET THE TEAM: The 2013 Victoria Advocate all-area softball team

AWARD WINNERs



MVP



Cecilia Bauer, Refugio, senior, P

The senior, who is heading to Houston Baptist to play softball, was the driving force for the Ladycats this season. She batted .416 with six home runs, and posted a 2.33 ERA in the circle in 147 innings. She was instrumental in the Ladycats longest playoff run in team history, and was named District 30-2A's MVP. "She is an outstanding leader with an amazing work ethic," said coach Cortney Hunkapillar.



Offensive Player of the Year



Taylor Williams, Flatonia, senior, 3B

The senior, who is heading to South Carolina, had another MVP-type season at the plate, batting .565 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs. She also stole 19 bases and walked 26 times and had an astonishing on-base percentage of .684. "(She) is arguably the best and most accomplished player to ever play at Flatonia," said coach Rodney Stryk.



Defensive Player of the Year



Paige TerrellSt. Joseph, senior, CF

The senior, who will play at Coastal Bend College next year, patrolled center field with confidence, able to track down most fly balls and rarely committing errors. The four-year starter batted .485 this year also with 48 stolen bases. She made the TAPPS all-state team for the third straight year.



Pitcher of the year



Madison Garza Industrial, junior, P

The junior was lights out for the District 30-2A champion, collecting 234 strikeouts and posting an ERA of 1.17 with a record of 15-9-1. She also contributed three homers and a .440 batting average.



Newcomer of the Year



Coco Caraway Hallettsville, freshman, P

The freshman pitcher was one of the key components for the District 28-2A champion Brahmas. She struck out 174 for the Brahmas with a record of 21-4 and an ERA of 1.80.



Coach of the Year



Roger MaupinWeimar

Maupin helmed a Weimar team that first ran through a strong District 28-1A, then steamrolled its way to the school's sixth state championship.

FIRST TEAM



Amanda Sohrt, St. Joseph, sophomore

The sophomore pitcher was 14-4 this season with a 1.86 ERA and 87 strikeouts, but was also a force in the middle of the Lady Flyers lineup with a 3.33 batting average.



Kendall Marak, Weimar, junior

The junior pitcher was 32-2 this year with an ERA of 0.70 and 293 strikeouts. She won MVP honors in District 28-1A, and was the winning pitcher in Weimar's state title game.



Reagan Renken, Yoakum, junior

The junior catcher batted .543 this year with 18 doubles and six triples. She was also a strong defensive catcher, committing just two errors all season.



Erin Niemeier, El Campo, junior

The junior first baseman batted .391 this season out of the cleanup spot for El Campo with three home runs. She was the offensive player of the year for District 25-3A.



Lana Hickson, Hallettsville, junior

The junior second baseman batted .443 for a talented and young Brahmas squad while knocking in 60 RBIs and gathering three homers.



Aileen Lundquist, Karnes City, senior

The senior third baseman and pitcher, who is heading to Coastal Bend College, led the area with a .621 batting average. She also stole 50 bases and collected 12 doubles.



Kristin Schacherl, Shiner, junior

The junior shortstop was the offensive player of the year for District 28-1A. She batted .480 this season with 41 RBIs.



Morgan Klaevemann, Refugio, junior

The junior outfielder and shortstop, who is committed to Florida State, batted an even .500 for Refugio with 42 runs scored. She also had seven doubles and five triples.



Shelby Vacek, Weimar, sophomore

The switch-hitting sophomore center fielder for Weimar committed only one error in the field, and batted .391 with 31 stolen bases.



Kirsten Heger, Sacred Heart, senior

The senior outfielder was an important cog for an Indianettes team that made it to the TAPPS state 1A/2A semifinal this year. She is heading to Coastal Bend College next year.



Jade Bujnoch, Schulenburg, sophomore

The sophomore first baseman and pitcher batted .563 this season with three homers, as well as striking out 116 this season in the circle.



Georgi Garza, Ganado, senior

The senior pitcher and infielder is a four-year starter, batting .413 this season with four home runs. In 43 1/3 innings pitched, she had an ERA of 2.75. She also graduated as Ganado's valedictorian.
