I heard about the new University of Houston-Victoria master's family nurse practitioner degree. How do I apply?

The University of Houston-Victoria will hold its first Master of Science in Nursing family nurse practitioner classes this fall. Applications are being accepted to start the program in the fall.

Recently approved by the UH Regents and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the new track will help address the shortage of health care providers in the state.

Nurse practitioners' scope of practice is to diagnose and prescribe medication for common, well-defined health care needs. They also provide health promotion and illness prevention.

The UHV family nurse practitioner master's degree is designed to prepare students to practice as nurse practitioners and educators in nursing programs, to translate research into practice and to assume leadership roles in advanced nursing practices. The MSN program builds upon the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree to prepare nurses for advanced practice.

Now that the program is official, many area nurses are asking about details and how they can be one of the first students to take these classes. Here are a few things to know before applying:

Space is limited in the program, so interested students are encouraged to apply early. The fall semester application deadline is July 15.

Interested nurses can apply online at uhv.edu/nursing/msn. The application process is through NursingCAS, a centralized application service.

There are $20,000 stipends available for qualified full-time family nurse practitioner students. The stipends will help students finish the program in two years and start their advanced nursing careers as soon as possible.

Classes are scheduled for UHV's main campus in Victoria, as well as at UH Sugar Land and the UH System at Cinco Ranch in Katy, where the UHV School of Nursing offers programs. For the first semester, courses will be held in Sugar Land on Thursdays. The first class begins Aug. 26.

For more information about UHV nursing programs, visit uhv.edu/nursing or call toll free at 877-970-4848, ext. 4370.

The UHV MSN program also offers concentrations in nursing administration and education. The UHV School of Nursing's programs are approved by the Texas Board of Nursing and are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
